It started when I was (I believe) ganging some circuited fixtures together with the gang tool in Vectoworks. When I swapped between VW and LW, LW updated and the fixtures I had selected became offset by about 4000' in the x coord column. Any ideas?

Lightwright only shows what Vectorworks sends it, especially LW5, which can't even reformat the data. LW6 gets coordinate in numeric form from VW and translates it into a user-readable form, but it uses the same method to generate X, Y, and Z coordinates, so there's literally no way it could screw up the X coordinate without also affecting the others.
In any case, it sure sounds like the user origin moved itself in Vectorworks. That can happen unexpectedly, it's been an issue (a.k.a "bug") for years - particularly if you set a user-defined origin. The best thing to do is never set a user-defined origin, always work off the "real" origin.

I completely agree with you about not setting a user origin; unfortunately, I receive a lot of plots that are already "complete" and I have to work on them to be able to process them using my system. So I often have to move the origin to plaster/center where it belongs. I feel like you are correct about the user origin vs. drawing origin. What I don't understand is why it's reading differently on one set of lights than another. it's as if it's selectively sending the drawing origin to a few units while using the user origin for the rest.

I had a similar issue with VW Cords updating in LW. Solution I found was to move the user origin then nudge all fixtures in VW once and back again to force the fields to update.

When I get a drawing that doesn't have plaster/center at 0-0, I take the time to move all of the geometry until it is - I don't set a user origin, it's too prone to problems. Moving everything to 0-0 is actually pretty easy, just look at the existing center line and see what its X coordinate is, then select All and move it by the negative of the x coordinate. Example: The center line's X coordinate is 4567.54, so I select all objects and use the Move command to move everything -4567.54. It doesn't change anything's classes or layers, though it can impact viewports, which may need their crops moved. Of course, if the section is drawn somewhere other than over the ground plan, you're screwed, but depending on how much drawing there is, I often move that, too. Just my .02...
