I've recently been having an issue where Lightwright will import lighting fixtures from all open Vectorworks files, even though the Data Exchange is pointed at the correct file. The first vectorworks file will then import new lights from the Lightwright file, including ones from the other open file.
Has anybody else experienced this? Any troubleshooting ideas? Right now I'm just in the habit of working on one file at a time and checking all my final paperwork carefully.

Lightwright only looks at one .xml file, and each Vectorworks document *should* be writing to its own .xml file, but maybe it's not doing that because you have multiple .vwx files open, and it's getting confused.
How many Vectorworks files do you have open at once?
Make sure each .vwx file is set to write the .xml file in the same location as the .vwx file and with the same name as the .vwx file. Do NOT let Vectorworks write the .xml to a custom location.
If this isn't the problem, then you need to file a bug report with Vectorworks ASAP (so it could be fixed in VW 2018?) and include all of the .vwx and .lw6 files, with very clear instructions about where the files are located on your computer and which .xml file you've selected in Lightwright. Be sure to tell them how many .vwx files you have open at once, how you open them, and how you're switching between them
Once you've filed a bug report with Vectowrosk, I'd suggest you have only one .vwx drawing open at a time, to avoid running into problems until VW puzzles things out and gets them fixed.

Why shouldn't VW write the XML file to a custom location? Is this a general thing or specific to this instance? I always put the XML file in a folder that doesn't sync to my cloud storage because if I don't the LW/VW link gets interupted and LW disconnects from the XML.

You can put the .xml file in a custom location, that itself is no problem, and your reason for putting it there is good. However, I've found that people tend to lose track of which .xml file Lightwright is linked to vs. the one that Vectorworks is reading/writing. It's easy to have multiple .vwx files all pointing to the same .xml file, which screws everything up.
Here's a question: Is the .lw6 file you're using an old one that you're modifying to suit a new show? If so, it's possible that when VW adds a new light, Lightwright is looking at deleted lights in the show's history and matching the UID of the newly-added light with a deleted one, thus restoring all the data that was in the light when it was deleted. That might make it look like Lightwright is getting data from another show. If you need to re-work an existing .lw6 file, be sure to clear all history from it before you begin the new show. I can't tell whether that's what is happening in this case, but it might be.
