Hello everybody, i have been working on a Show during the last Weeks. Everything was fine until today. I was preparing DMX Adresses in Vector Works 2017, Light Wright was closed. At the End of the Day i opened my LW File to import the Changes i had made, but LW told me that my XML File would be corrupted and i should do a "full export on exit" in VWX. I tryed to do so but as i opend the document preferences in VWX the field was grey, activated and no changes possible. I have a suspicion whre the Problem may come from: My Vector Works File and the XML File are located in a Dropbox Folder, the VWX File was opend by me the whole Day. As i was searching for the Problem i noticed that someone else opend a copy of my Plan and also created an XML File. Both Files whre in the same Folder as mine. Is it possible that this Action caused the Problem i have now? I also tried so save a copy of my Plan on my local HDD and create a new XML File but when i try to use this in a new LW Document LW tells me that this is not a valid Data Exchange XML File. Does anybody have an Idea about my Problem? I am really hopelss... Greetings from Germany... CVS

Hi cvs, quit and restart Vectorworks. It might be possible that your problem is gone and you will be able to generate a new XML-file. If not: Open a new blank document and reverence the original file into the new document. Cut the reference to the original file. Doing so will force Vectorworks to recalculate any data coming in from the original file. Do a full XML-export on exit to generate a new XML-file. You should avoid to use Dropbox or similar services wile working with data exchange between Vectorworks and Lightwright. Please follow this link for details: www.mckernon.com/supportmenu/vwdataexchange.htmlBest of luck!

Yes, Dropbox can screw up lots of files, including .xml files. There are also some antivirus utilities that can block Lightwright and Vectorworks from reading & writing the .xml file correctly. There's a page at www.mckernon.com under Support that describes a long list of things that can be problems for Data Exchange.

Thank you ll for your Support and Sorry for my late Reply...I was able to fix it, i think Dropbox was the Reason why the XML was corrupted.

HI-- Vworks 2018 and LW5 user here. First time I am having the "not valid .XML" error in many years of using automatic data exchange.
I read the forum linked earlier in this thread--I found the upside down question marks in the .xml file in text edit but I don't understand what I am supposed to do to resolve them. They are in the first line of text in the file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?> <SLData>
Otherwise I am doing everything normally--Spotlight preferences, saving to same location as file, no weird characters in the file name, no Dropbox or remote servers or storage involved.
Can anyone advise me what to do? It's kind of brought my drafting day to a standstill.
Thanks so much- Mary Ellen

Update:
So those aren't upside down question marks haha---there are no upside down question marks in the file at all.
So I am a bit unsure how to fix this issue!

If invalid characters (things like tab or control characters) get into data fields in Vectorworks, it invalidates the .xl file and Lightwright can't read it. I made a Data Zap tool to fix it in these cases, the tool is available at www.mckernon.com either under the Downloads menu or in the Vectorworks problems page. At the moment, it's Mac only, but wouldn't take much to do a Windows build.
