Hey All, I wanted to share a label idea I have started using. I like using Avery 6870 labels on XLR data cable and I like to label each jumper between 2 dmx devices with a "to" and a "from". By creating a custom label that bridges over 2 of the Avery labels I am able to make 2 labels in 1 screen and flip flop the information for each location. I also used some conditional formatting to blank out some data as needed or to create a spare for the same positon, all using the same label file. I utilized a separate column in my worksheet called "feeds from" which i have to type in which unit number the dmx comes from. Right now the limitation is that the units all have to be in the same position. But I think this shows there is a lot that can be done here! Kev Data Jumper combined label 2x KJB.lwlbl (2.12 KB)

Interesting. So you created a Custom size that is essentially 2 Rows high? Very elegant.
I'm not familiar with the 6870 off hand, how does it fit on the cable? Do you put it right on the XLR or make some sort of a flag out of it?

Yes exactly 2 rows on top of 2 labels.
The Avery 6870 is 3/4" high and and works well around any xlr connector. We use clear 3m vinyl tape under and over the label so it is easy to remove or transfer to another cable. My guys align them with the lock pin and locate far enough back that they don't interfere with the mating panel mount connector. We are very specific and proud of our labeling!

Cool, I'd like to see a picture of the final product!

I've been trying to wrap my brain around how to get the label to flip the data I want on my M and F cables, and get it all on one sheet.
The custom size bridging labels is brilliant.
Thanks!

And now that John has implemented (color "none") another item through the power of our positive suggestions you are able to have information turn off or on while >stacking< the "to" info and "from" info area's without having to get into crazy offsets or using white lettering to hide unused information. Thanks John for listening and responding. As Kevin has said.....we are all very particular about labels... P.S. John I would still like color "none" on the variable as well as on just the color. please.

Daisy chaining data has been in discussion with John during earlier beta testing began. Lord knows I wrote a fair amount of emails explaining its use. We need to have a way to lay down a bread crumb for John and LW to follow the chain even when it jumps from position (perhaps even especially when it jumps position). Ive suggested a column that has uses numerical order knowing that the lowest number is the "start" of the chain. You kinda don't (at least for me) wan't your daisy information to really follow your position as much as a "Port" or "Port number" on whatever drives the signal. Such as an opto splitter or Series 400 box or Ram power supply ect ect ect.....
I'm curious about other thoughts on this.

They are already trying to get this same daisy chaining information on the plot, would be worthwhile to see if there was a way to export order from them? could be useful.

Just poking label fun to see how people are developing LW labels a year "ish" later. Lot's of things develop and new things are learned but back when we created the daisy chaining label it was a real pain. But now it's a no brainer. No Mail Merge or Filemaker support needed. Even color coded by PRG data color for easy recognition. Red = dmx. Enjoy Justin Freeman
