Why cant I sort by universe? (not address). it just doesn't exist.

Actually, you can. Do a View/Universe, use 1 as the universe# you want to see. Then click the N button in the upper right corner of the worksheet window to view the next universe (or the L to view the last/previous one).
You can then sort within each universe however you want.

Yeah I need to see all of the universes at once. I do all of my cable labels in lw with each piece of cable being an instrument. I assign data cables a universe but obviously they dont have an address, I was making labels for my opto ports and wanted to have them in order by universe, i ended up copying and pasting universe to a user field and sorting by that. Just wondering..

One of the ways that I ordganise this is to name the opto by universe.
So for me...the Optos are #1A , 1B, 1C 3 Optos in universe 1. Ports A, B, C, D, E
I have a column for Opto name and a column for Opto Port.
For an OCTO or Gateway we name the port by What universe it is outputing so OCTO 1 Port A/21 B/22 C/38
Hope that helps

Just curious, why do you make all your cables separate instruments? That's got to be a ton of data entry.
I create two user columns Male and Female, and between that and the Cable and Data Cable columns I've got all the information I need for labels attached to the fixtures they feed. (in the Worksheet, I use Male and Female exclusively for the Data path. But I also use them in the Circuit Name Maintenance sheet, showing where each part of my Multi Cables begin and end.)
In your case, you would enter the Opto Port in Male, and the fixture in Female (I type in Position and #, but you could also just use the Channel number or whatever.) When you're ready to print those labels, use View-->Male. Select all the Opto Ports, then sort by Address. At least, I think that should work. I'll have to try that out in my Test file later.
I do like Kevin's idea for Opto Name and Port columns, might have to borrow that one.

I do it because of the other thread about being able to sort things by box. The data entry is very easy, I have vw symbols for all of my cable so i end up making what looks like a circuit diagram but can quickly grab things and assign data to it. Others that have seen these files get a little wide eyed but it works very well for me. I do it in its own separate set of files as to not add too much to my working file.

Ah, makes sense.
I'm always intrigued when I see how different people use the program.

We tend to use columns to sort things as well.... but I use a single row to represent a single unit...it's power/dimmer, it's address, it's opto name, Opto Port, Circuit Name. Circuit Number, Color , instrument type. And the cable lengths. If I need to sort it by box #, I would add a column.
We sometimes do this for bundling...make a column for bundles, add the same number for positions that need to be bundled together and then sort by mult or data etc. Then Print the worksheet and hand it to the guy to bundle together.
